Carver/Slowe

Carver/Slowe Building

The Carver/Slowe Story

Set in the heart of the LeDroit Park neighborhood sits Carver Apartments, originally Howard University's Carver Hall, named for George Washington Carver, a prolific inventor, orator, and agricultural expert. This 3-story property which had been primarily used as a dormitory for Howard University students was built in 1942 by the US government and used to house military personnel. It is currently a deco-inspired 62 unit apartment building that is adjacent to Howard University and the Howard University Hospital and is within close proximity to high end restaurants and shopping.

Slowe Apartments, originally known as Slowe Hall,  was built in the 1930s, and named in honor of pioneering teacher, feminist, mentor, tennis pro, and Howard University's first Dean of Women, Lucy Diggs Slowe. It is currently a luxury apartment building that features the building’s original character and includes an Art Moderne lobby and well-appointed, collaborative amenity spaces. Slowe Apartments is also located in LeDroit Park and is walking distance to Howard University and the Howard University Hospital.

The renovation of both Carver and Slowe Halls and conversion to market rate apartments is a part of Howard’s campus master plan to fund campus modernization initiatives, transform the neighborhoods surrounding Howard’s campus, and support the priorities of the University’s students, faculty, staff, alumni, and surrounding communities.
