Building 40 Renovation
Building 40 is being renewed in phases to bring advising, career services, instruction, and other student-facing functions into a more cohesive and welcoming environment.
2026-2027 Academic Year Opening Status: Renovation work on the ground, second, and third floors is substantially complete. Furniture, technology, and departmental moves are being coordinated around the opening of the academic year. The Yard-facing first-floor work will continue through early fall.
Why Building 40 Matters
For roughly two decades, Building 40 was home to the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, a nationally recognized public charter school established by Howard in 2005. With the middle school now at the renovated Miner Building, Building 40 is beginning a new chapter centered on the undergraduate student experience.
Advising, tutoring, career support, instruction, and other student-facing resources are coming together in a welcoming environment designed to make support easier to find, navigate, and use. The renewed building will give students a central place to receive guidance, build skills, prepare for careers, and connect with the people and resources that help them thrive.
From Renovation to Opening
The project moved from program development and design into abatement, selective demolition, building-systems renewal, and interior construction across the ground, second, and third floors. Those spaces are now in their final readiness sequence, including finishes, signage, furniture, technology, commissioning, and departmental moves.
The first wave of renewed spaces is expected to open around the beginning of the academic year. The completion of the first-floor phase will create a more integrated home for additional enrollment and administrative services. These renovations will enliven a familiar campus building as a vibrant center for student support.
What Students and Employees Should Know
Opening activities will occur in phases. University units will communicate service locations, move dates, and any temporary access instructions directly to their communities as those details are finalized.
